Karen McAlister
Dr Karen McAlister brings over 30 years’ experience in the voluntary and community sector, with 25 years as a qualified social worker specialising in children, young people and families. Having spent 19 years at Voice of Young People in Care (VOYPIC), she played a central role in establishing the organisation and progressed to Assistant Director.
Over the past 11 years, Karen has worked with Simon Community, holding senior leadership positions focused on operational management and, more recently, leading impact and innovation. Her current role centres on developing new approaches, driving organisational change, managing projects, and strengthening how impact is measured through research and strategic thinking. She also holds a doctorate in Childhood Studies from Queen’s University, with research focused on homelessness and adverse childhood experiences, further reinforcing her expertise in the intersection of social care and housing.
Dr McAlister has extensive governance experience, having previously served as Chair of MACS and as a board member for First Key Northern Ireland and First Key UK. Her motivation for joining the Grove Housing Association Board is rooted in a strong belief in community-based organisations and their potential to drive meaningful change. Having long been aware of Grove’s work locally and through her professional networks, she is particularly drawn to its ambition and openness to innovation. She is keen to contribute her expertise in impact, strategy and community engagement to support Grove’s evolving direction, and is motivated by a shared commitment to keeping people and communities at the heart of decision-making.
