Fire Safety during Christmas

Fire Safety Reminder for the Christmas Period

The Christmas period, while joyous, brings an increased risk of fire due to lights, candles, decorations, and cooking. We urge everyone to take a few moments to review the critical safety measures below, provided by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), to help ensure a safe and happy holiday for you and your neighbours.

Top Fire Safety Tips for a Safe Christmas

  • Smoke Alarms - Have a working smoke alarm. If your smoke alarm is not working, report it to Grove Housing immediately via our maintenance line.

  • Cooking - NEVER leave cooking unattended and avoid cooking whilst under the influence of alcohol. Make sure all cooking appliances are turned off after use.

  • Electrical Equipment - Only buy electrical items (including chargers) from reputable retailers. Ensure all electrical equipment and chargers comply with the required safety standards.

  • Heaters - If you are using extra heaters during the winter months, make sure they are kept away from soft furnishings and Christmas decorations.

  • Christmas Trees (Real) - If you choose to have a real Christmas tree, ensure it is well hydrated (watered regularly) as a dry tree becomes highly flammable.

  • Candles - Keep candles away from soft furnishings, decorations, Christmas trees, and wrapping paper. Ensure they are out of reach from pets and children. NEVER leave candles unattended.

  • Smoking - Make sure cigarettes are extinguished correctly and empty ashtrays safely. NEVER smoke in bed.

  • Escape Routes - Keep your escape routes clear (hallways, stairs, and doors) and discuss your fire escape plan with your family and anyone else who may be staying with you.

  • Community - Check on older relatives and neighbours to ensure their safety and offer assistance if needed.

  • Nighttime Safety Routine (Quick Check) - Unplug Everything: Always unplug all lights and device chargers/adapters and ensure all cooking and heating appliances are switched off. Never store any portable gas appliances (e.g., camping stoves) inside the property.

Your safety is our priority. Please be vigilant and follow these simple guidelines to protect your home, your loved ones, and your community.
